New Years Party
New Years is a very special cultural event in Japan that symbolizes a fresh start with a new year. In January, we love to have a New Years event where we get together for a pot luck with entertainment, mochi pounding, children’s gifts, and other fun activities!
Hakamairi
In August, we take part in this cultural event by visiting the graves of past Japanese and Japanese Canadians. We place a flower on Japanese graves on our list at two of the graveyards, and read an ‘Act of Remembrance’ for all the past members that have passed on. This is usually followed by a brunch. Children are welcome and usually help place the flowers.
Picnic in Wascana Park
An old tradition that started in the 1930’s has brought us to today where we get together in June or July and have hotdogs and hamburgers that are supplied by the club. Members are asked to bring a salad or a dessert, something to drink for themselves, and lawn chairs. We have a great time together, and there are games for the children, like Suikawari (watermelon smashing)!
Keirokai
This is an important cultural event for the celebration of the seniors in our club. In September, we sometimes will have a potluck, an afternoon tea, or a luncheon at a restaurant. Children are encouraged to speak with the seniors and to learn about this cultural event.
